Jura Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made from Scottish barley, milled and mashed on-site and distilled through Jura's enormous 28-foot tall copper-pot stills. Their Whiskies are just as curiously delightful. Today, the Jura Distillery is a curious hybrid creature, with its a fusion of modern distillation techniques and traditional craftsmanship, it remains one of the most remote and isolated distilleries on the planet. Nearly a century after it was opened, the distillery was dismantled due to a land dispute, and remained closed until 1963. The Old Jura Distillery was founded by Laird Archibald Campbell, and sits alongside the Corryvreckan Whirlpool. They are owned by independent bottlers Whyte and Mackay. The Isle of Jura distillery was founded in 1963, but its facilities date back as far as 1810, as being the first licensed distillery on Jura.

The scotch has a woody nose with a hint of floral honey. In the glass, Isle of Jura’s 10 Year Old has a light, almost lemony gold coloring. In keeping with the Jura style, the box bears the Celtic symbol for birth, while the bottle combines a bit of the old fashioned with a bit of the modern, being clear with a slight indentation about the waist and embedded lettering. The Isle of Jura 10 Year Old Single Malt, however, is the entry-level label of the line, hence “Origin.” Jura’s scotches is built around notions and imagery of local traditional and medieval Celtic mysticism, and it includes a handful of limited editions. Jura itself is a storied place, albeit somewhat forbidding and thinly populated, at least according to George Orwell, who retreated there to write his novel 1984.ĭespite coming from such an old distillery, the Isle of Jura whiskey line is relatively new.
